Laconica is now StatusNet

I'm happy to announce today that our main product, the Open Source microblogging server Laconica, has a new name. StatusNet is the new name that simply reflects what our software does: sends status updates into your social network. We think it's clear and simple, serious without being stuffy. As part of this change, we've also made changes to the company itself. From here on, we'll be known as StatusNet, Inc. showing the renewed concentration on our core product. Finally, we've concentrated our disparate Web presences at laconi.ca and controlyourself.ca into one hub: status.net. This will be the distribution point for the software; the developer hub for our dev group; and the main address for the hosted service we'll be launching in the near future. I've really liked the names we've used in the past, but I think (and my team and the developers agree) that using StatusNet will be great for the company and for this project. Thanks to everyone who's given us feedback on the name; it's really turned out well.

To everyone who liked the old names (Laconica and Control Yourself): I liked them too. They were the products of my own sense of humour, and I'll miss using them.

I agree that StatusNet is less flamboyant and tricky, but I think the clarity and simplicity outweigh the cleverness of the old names.

But did you have a poll to do this? Of course you guys are the authors and it's up to you to choose a name or change it. The new name is too simple. laconica was much better. But I can like this name because of the system. Good Luck
