Laconica is now StatusNet

Evan Prodromou's picture

I'm happy to announce today that our main product, the Open Source microblogging server Laconica, has a new name.

StatusNet is the new name that simply reflects what our software does: sends status updates into your social network. We think it's clear and simple, serious without being stuffy.

As part of this change, we've also made changes to the company itself. From here on, we'll be known as StatusNet, Inc. showing the renewed concentration on our core product.

Finally, we've concentrated our disparate Web presences at laconi.ca and controlyourself.ca into one hub: status.net. This will be the distribution point for the software; the developer hub for our dev group; and the main address for the hosted service we'll be launching in the near future.

I've really liked the names we've used in the past, but I think (and my team and the developers agree) that using StatusNet will be great for the company and for this project. Thanks to everyone who's given us feedback on the name; it's really turned out well.

Based on Alexa Ranking - Good Move

I agree that the name is more understandable! And, with an Alexa ranking of 13,308 - it looks as though your renaming strategy has paid off. I believe you were ranked above 100,000 before the change - correct?

Congrats to your team

Congrats to you and your team members. You have done very well. Hoping to use status.net in the near future. Keep delivering good stuff.

congrats

Like the logo on the site, good choice of colours. Name could have been a bit more unique but still fitting.

Congrats

Congrats Evan for the new name... great name!!!

Congrats and Admin Account

First of all, a long-delayed congratulations on the new StatusNet name. Second, I wanted to echo the earlier comment made about the admin account-- is there one, and if so, how do I access it? Thanks!

We like the new name it's easier to say and says a little bit more about what it does then "laconica". Status.net is a much better handle and should still please all the domain hack fans too.

@Ferodynamics US$3500.

@Ferodynamics US$3500. Suprisingly affordable for a short English dictionary word with a .net TLD, but I think that .net and .org are underappreciated by domain name traders. There are probably a lot of other bargains out there.

To everyone who liked the old

To everyone who liked the old names (Laconica and Control Yourself): I liked them too. They were the products of my own sense of humour, and I'll miss using them.

I agree that StatusNet is less flamboyant and tricky, but I think the clarity and simplicity outweigh the cleverness of the old names.

Sorry, but in my opinion old name was much better. Laconica is cool and original. StatusNet is boring and too generic. I'm not sure I really send my status updates when I'm writing what I'm thinking or doing or feeling or listening to or making conversation... But I'm quite sure I send short, *laconic* messages at that time.

i dont like the name, is boring and sounds like a 0815 business company. Laconica was a much more cooler projectname.

Just to have some dissent

Just to have some dissent here: I think StatusNet is way too dry and clinical, it's a description, not a name... I'd expect it as a module or class name, but not as a public facing one, sorry...

I think the new name is much better! I said recently that one big advantage that Twitter has is its name. Twitter, tweet, tweeting, retweeting -- all are very natural.

StatusNet is much more understandable than Laconica (which was a nice name, but a bit too... geeky?)
