New StatusNet Support Forum
A huge part of the success of any Open Source product is the quality and availability of peer support. If admins, developers, designers and users can ask questions and get answers easily, it's much more likely they'll be successful and get that "I rule' moment.
We have a number of peer support options for StatusNet: the Trac-based bug reporting tool; our statusnet-dev mailing list; our IRC channel #statusnet on Freenode, and our excellent StatusNet wiki.
Many people in the Web community, though, look to forums ("fora"?) for a quick way to get quick help about a program. It's less common with Open Source software, although UbuntuForums and others have shown that there's a lot of value there, too.
So, today we're launching forum.status.net, the new, official, peer-support forum for the StatusNet software. We hope that Web admins, designers, and developers who are getting started with StatusNet can use it to get the help they need to be successful. StatusNet staff -- including core developers and professional tech support -- will be watching this forum closely and answering questions as they come up.
How does forum.status.net fit into the rest of our support and documentation universe? We're not sure yet, but my hope is that the forum will act as a first-level support system for people who are using StatusNet. I hope that answers that come up will migrate to be part of the peer documentation on the wiki or even make it into official documentation.
An additional thanks to Vanilla Forums for providing the excellent software and hosting service on which forum.status.net is based. We've been very happy with the professional look-and-feel of the Vanilla software and we think it's a great platform. A great example of high-quality Open Source software!
