StatusReport: Federated Social Web Summit, OSCON, FISL, and StatusCheck!

Hello StatusNet Community! This is Derek reporting to you from StatusNet. After close to a week of heat wave weather here in Montreal, things are heating up as StatusNet has been hard at work preparing for an upcoming week of events, presentations, and lots of traveling! So let's get to it!

Latest updates

A StatusCheck event will be held in Portland on Wednesday July 21, 2010 at Henry's Tavern in Portland, Oregon. Everyone is invited to join the StatusNet team for a drink and some good conversation!

Since the release of the StatusNet Desktop Client, everything has been going smoothly and there has been good feedback overall.

Recent Mentions of StatusNet

StatusNet was mentioned recently in an article entitled Motorola Goes StatusNet! This article explores the StatusNet release of the Motorola Case Study and how it all started with Motorola experimenting with StatusNet and their being satisfied with the services that StatusNet has to offer.

In another article entitled Identi.ca's official desktop app ain’t ‘alf bad, this author talks about how impressed he is with the StatusNet desktop client!

And finally, an article entitled So You Want to Only Use One Microblogging Service is a continuation of an article that was already published, also entitled So You Want to Take Control of Your MicroBlogging.In the most recent article, the author expands on StatusNet and he focuses on PubSubHubbub (PuSH).

Upcoming Events

StatusNet is one of the participants in the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2010. There are 5 students hacking on StatusNet, mentored by people from StatusNet including Evan Prodromou (CEO and founder of StatusNet). The students are preparing their mid-term progress reports this week!

The Federated Social Web Summit is coming up, on Sunday July 18th, and StatusNet is getting anxious! Evan Prodromou (CEO and founder of StatusNet) has written some blog posts explaining what the federated social web is and what it is good for. These blogs are entitled What is the federated social web? and Features of a federated social web.

Following the Federated Social Web Summit, from Monday July 19th to the 23rd is the Open Source Conference OSCON 2010! Here, Evan Prodromou (CEO and founder of StatusNet) will be contributing to a presentation, on Wednesday July 21, entitled Web Services: How Can Open Source Software Compete?, and on Friday July 23rd, he will make another presentation entitled Open Source and the Federated Social Web.

The 11th International Free Software Forum (FISL) is quickly approaching, taking place from July 21st to the 24th. Jon Phillips (Community Director at StatusNet) will be key noting at this event, giving a presentation entitled "Building an Autonomous Federated Social Web: OStatus, Status.Net, and Identi.ca." This presentation will look at the current problem with relying upon closed walled-garden-like networks like Facebook or Twitter. It then provides a survey of solutions, and provides a route for Free and Open Source Software developers to collaborate and build something based in reality and not just a kickstarter fundraiser.
