Barcelona, Wednesday, 3 November 2010 - Today StatusNet launched people-powered Add-Ons Directory on the StatusNet main website. With thousands upon thousands of StatusNet social messaging installations globally, translations of the software into many languages, StatusNet supports the Open Web at the Mozilla Drumbeat Festival in Barcelona this week by highlighting the hundreds of Add-Ons - themes, plugins and applications - which have been created for free usage.

StatusNet Founder and CEO, Evan Prodromou stated, "We are extremely supportive of our community making themes, plugins and addons. Part of the power of our software is that it is Open Source and encourages anyone to not only help make our software better, but also to extend it in creative ways we never envisioned. The more people who create Add-Ons at our new open directory, the stronger our community becomes together."

StatusNet Add-Ons are categorized as Themes, Plugins and Apps. Themes allow for designers like Michael Bernstein to create an entirely different look and feel for a StatusNet instance as he did with the new Victorian and MNML themes. The StatusNet Server software is hyper-extensible and allows for all manner of plugins to the software such as adding Piwik statistics, recaptcha and extensible profile features. StatusNet released its own Apps previously, including StatusNet Desktop and Mobile. 3rd party apps are also in the same directory with apps such as Adium chat program and the Mustard microblogging client for Android.

"As our Add-On Directory increases with contributions, we will continue to promote great Add-Ons publicly," said Jon Phillips, StatusNet Community Director. We are eager to see some radical departures from the standard StatusNet themes, and to work together to build thousands of plugins and apps to fill all types of niches. While we are a growing project, we could not make such a diverse contribution to society without the community of developers. We believe in Open Source and our community of developers."

StatusNet invites all developers to visit http://status.net/open-source addons to create an account and contribute to the Add-Ons directory today.
