Status.net Maintenance 25 February 2010 @ 9:00pm EST

Hello All,
Tonight, at 9:00pm EST we'll be performing site maintenance on the StatusNet Cloud Service.  All status.net-hosted sites (including Identi.ca) will be offline for a brief period during the upgrade. It is expected that there will be some performance degradation as we bring the site back online, and that it could continue through sometime around 1:00am EST.   As usual, we apologize in advance for any inconvenience this disruption in service might cause.

I'm excited to say that we've launched support for the adbard.net network on Identi.ca today. Identi.ca users will notice relevant links to Free Software-related companies, events, projects and services in the sidebars on Identi.ca pages.

Identi.ca character limit results

Last week we started a poll to measure community will on the preferred character limit for identi.ca. We used a polling tool built into the Drupal system we use for this blog. We also used an ad hoc system, asking users to post on Identi.ca with tags like #limit140, #limit280, to indicate their preference.

POLL: Character Limit on Identi.ca

One of the features of the StatusNet software has been that notices are limited to 140 Unicode characters, which (usually...) fits into a single SMS message, and which is the character limit for Twitter tweets. Some users love the limitations that 140 characters entail. Others find it unnecessarily restricting.

Important security alert for all versions of StatusNet

This morning at 9AM we received notice of a security vulnerability in all versions of the StatusNet software. The StatusNet team has verified the vulnerability and identified a separate but similar vulnerability in another block of code. For these reasons, we've issued Security Alert 0000002 and made new versions of all three branches of our software available for download.
