I'm proud to say that StatusNet is now a Silver Sponsor for this weekend's PodCamp Montreal. A PodCamp is a BarCamp-like meeting of podcasters and other social media producers and aficionados. Last year's PodCamp Montreal was great, and I'm glad that we've got a chance to help make this one even better.

I'll also be speaking on Saturday at 1:30PM about using StatusNet to distribute podcasts.

I'm happy to announce today that our main product, the Open Source microblogging server Laconica, has a new name.

StatusNet is the new name that simply reflects what our software does: sends status updates into your social network. We think it's clear and simple, serious without being stuffy.

As part of this change, we've also made changes to the company itself.

A quick note: Evan Prodromou will be presenting at the Creative Commons Salon in San Francisco on Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 at 7PM. The event also features Nathan Yergler of Creative Commons and Chris Dibona, Google's Open Source Programs Manager.

@evan and I are in San Jose for OSCON and naturally we're calling a dent event. Time: tomorrow night at 5:00 PM. Location: Gordon Biersch at 33 E San Fernando St, a short walk from the San Jose Convention Center. Gordon Biersch has tasty beer and upscale pub grub. No need to be an OSCON attendee to come to the Dent Event, all identi.ca users and other interested parties are welcome. We look forward to seeing you there!

It's been one year since the public launch of identi.ca on July 2, 2008.

At the time, I'd been working on the software for a few months, and after some friendly beta testing by Montreal tech folks, longtime Free-Software-loving friends, and autonomo.us members, I felt that it was time to Release Early, Release Often. So on vacation in Lake Tahoe, I sent out an announcement email to beta users at 5:30AM PDT.

Control Yourself, Inc. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), producer of Open Source Twitter alternative Laconica and host of the popular microblogging site identi.ca, announced the launch of a private beta of a new microblogging hosting service, status.net.

Our upgrade on Wednesday went... well... we're giving it a C right about now. Some parts have been great, like the new features that we get with our new 0.8.0 pre-release version of Laconica. But we've also moved to new hosting and we're rolled out on the status.net network, and that's meant some instability.

Right now we know of at least a few problems with the site, which we're working hard to fix:

  1. Some users can't log in, or do anything else.

We're doing a scheduled upgrade of Identi.ca to the status.net platform tonight, Wed 24 June, at 11:59PM EDT. (Just before midnight). This is short notice, but after our miss last week we really wanted to be ready before going forward.

We hope to be offline for <2 hours, with a strong probability of less that 1 hour. We'll keep this blog post (on a separate server) updated as the night goes on.

Update 9:06 PM: we're going offline now.

Update 9:59 PM: moved databases, moved XMPP server.

I'm in Portland, OR for the Open Source Bridge conference, which is turning out to be really awesome. I've never seen such a great collection of speakers, and a great tone and attitude from Portland's strong Open Source and Web communities. You can follow some of the discussion on the #osb09 tag page on identi.ca.

It seems like a great time to have a dentevent here in Portland -- our third so far!
