I'm glad to say that we've just released version 0.7.0 ("Rockville") of Laconica for download. Users of have been working with the software since we launched the pre-release version last week at MBC09, and we've shaken out a lot (but not all!) of the most important bugs. This has been a huge change to the codebase, with a lot of new user-visible changes.

  • Groups. Probably the most visible change for users, and the most interesting for us.

It's been a little over 6 months since I launched three new projects simultaneously: the microblogging service, the Laconica Open Source software that runs it, and the OpenMicroBlogging (OMB) protocol that links Laconica sites together.

I'm excited to be participating in MBC09, the Microblogging Conference in Hamburg, Germany. Running from January 23-24, MBC09 will be the first microblogging event in Europe. Control Yourself, Inc. is a proud sponsor of this community-organized event.

So many of our participants on are European -- it's been a great incentive to be more and more aware of Europe's role in Open Source, open network services, and open standards. I'm really looking forward to the dialogue and talks at MBC09, and hope to see many of you there.

Control Yourself's 4-person Montreal staff will be at tonight's CelebrateCamp. We're looking forward to hanging out with others from the Montreal tech startup community for this holiday event.

The upgrade of to Laconica 0.6.4 seems to have gone pretty well, but I'm going to give it a night to let people check out the new features before tagging the version and making a tarball for download.

Quick note: we'll be releasing a new version of Laconica on tonight, December 11 2008, at 11PM EDT. Although it is a minor release, it will include some new user-visible features, such as "blocking" unwanted subscribers, and finer-grained control of subscription output. will be down for about 15-20 minutes.

I want to take a second to congratulate the Pownce team on their acquisition by Six Apart. 6A is a great company doing really interesting work, and it sounds like it's going to be a great opportunity for both groups.

One of the downsides is that the Pownce site will be shutting down on Dec. 15.

We're happy to see a nice application ecosystem steadily growing around, including a number of great clients for the iPhone (which also work with the iPod Touch). A frequently asked question on is, what clients are there for the iPhone? Here's a rundown of what's available.
