We've had a big loss of data on identi.ca. All data created between about 18:00 UTC 22 Oct 2011 and about 17:00 UTC 27 Oct 2011 is missing from our databases. Data

Cause of the data loss isn't clear at this time. I changed our master/slave configuration last weekend, which might explain the problem if data wasn't being written, but it wouldn't explain why it's apparently working again.

I'm investigating the problem and hopefully we'll be able to recover that historical data.

We've had an outage on the routing server that does our load-balancing on the StatusNet cloud; identi.ca and most older sites are down.

2011-10-12 08:45 EDT: I briefly had the site back up, but there was data inconsistency between master-slave servers. I'm revising now.

2011-10-12 09:45 EDT: I think we've fixed the data inconsistencies.

I'm pleased to announce that StatusNet 1.0.0 has just gone golden. We've released the 1.0.0 version for download, and it's running now on all StatusNet cloud systems.

This is by far the biggest change to StatusNet since its inception. Notable changes include:

With the upgrade of our StatusNet cloud sites, including Identi.ca, to the 1.0.0 version of StatusNet, we've come one step closer to a 1.0.0 release. The new version of the software, 1.0.0rc1, is available for download. Please, take it for a test spin and report any issues in our issue tracker.

We feel ready! We've been working on StatusNet 1.0 for more than a year, with the first alpha and beta release happening earlier this summer. We've done bug-squashing and hacking and GSoC, and we think it's ready to go.

Because there are major changes to the data structures, we'll be doing a significant amount of downtime over the weekend, starting Friday 9/16 at 1PM EDT.  Our expectation is to be back online by Monday morning EDT.

Quick note for our friends: we'll be making a 1.0.0rc1 release on Friday, August 26, 2011. So we though it'd be a good idea to put that new version to the test with a bug-squashing party on Saturday August 27. (A bug-squashing party is a get-together to fix as many bugs as possible before a major release.) The core development team will be in our IRC channel (#statusnet) from 09:00-17:00 EDT (13:00-21:00 UTC).

Yvan Boily of the Mozilla Security team alerted us to a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack on versions of StatusNet from 0.8.x up. We have released new versions of the stable code (0.9.x branch) and upcoming 1.0 release (1.0.x branch). All StatusNet users are encouraged to upgrade to either version 0.9.9 or 1.0.0beta2 as soon as possible.

We've had unscheduled downtime on the StatusNet cloud: personal and community sites, as well as identi.ca, are affected.

Update: cascading errors between our memcached and apache servers were bringing all our web servers to a halt; we've put in some quick fixes to keep us running until we migrate all servers to 1.0.
