Podcast coverage roundup

It's been a while since we had a roundup of coverage of Identi.ca. I wanted to specifically link to podcast episodes where I've been talking about Identi.ca and Laconi.ca.

Identi.ca upgrade at 12:01AM on October 4th, 2008

I'll be upgrading identi.ca to the latest version of the Laconica software just after midnight on Friday. The next version, 0.6.1, features better support for commands in posts (like "d nickname direct message" sends a direct message to "nickname"); has API support for direct messages and faves; and has considerably extended memcached support, for faster response.

At the same time I'll be reconfiguring storage of PHP sessions to use memcached (another optimization), which means that users who are online before the upgrade may need to re-login after it.

Codefest 2.2 this weekend

I'll be participating in the Montreal Codefest 2.2 this weekend, October 4 and 5. Codefest is a weekend hacking event where people who love to code get together in a room with good wifi and easily-accessible coffee, beer, and food and just hack like crazy. I've done two other such events here in Montreal, and they were great. A big chunk of Laconica was written at Codefest 2.1.

Interested people are invited to participate either locally (if you're in town) or remotely on the #laconica channel on freenode.net.

Seesmic's Twhirl to Support Identi.ca

A good story on CNET about the new version of Twhirl that supports Identi.ca. Twhirl is a popular desktop client for Twitter, owned by Seesmic, which supports multiple streaming protocols for presence/status updates. We're happy and proud to be included inTwhirl's latest version!

We've been working with Seesmic engineers since the launch of Identi.ca to get the software to talk to our Open Source micro-blogging service.

News on Identi.ca: API, XMPP feed

Quick news on the Identi.ca front. First, as Dave Winer pointed out earlier, Identi.ca now supports an API compatible with Twitter's.

Control Yourself, Inc. launches Identi.ca, the Open Microblogging Service

Montreal, Quebec-based Control Yourself, Inc. today launched Identi.ca, the open microblogging service. Users can post short messages about themselves to Identi.ca, which are then broadcast to friends in their social network using instant messages (IM), RSS feeds, and the Web.

Identi.ca is similar to existing microblogging sites such as Twitter, Jaiku, or Pownce. Unlike those services, Identi.ca's underlying software is available under an Open Source license.

An URL redirector that supports the Open Service Defintion

As part of the development of Identica, I needed to find an URL redirection service to use by default. One of Identica's goals is to implement the Open Service Definition, so I wanted to find and use a redirector that was also OSD-compliant.

I wasn't able to come up with one, so I looked around for Open Source software to use in deploying my own.
