Upgrade on status.net cloud 9 Feb 2011 4AM UTC

Quick note: we have scheduled downtime for the status.net cloud tonight at 11PM EST to upgrade our software to the latest release version, 0.9.7 ("World Leader Pretend"). It should be relatively straightforward, so our downtime window is about 30 minutes.

We'll have some more information on what's in the new release in a blog post after the upgrade.

Federated Social Web: Top 10 of 2010

For those of us who have been working on federating the social web, 2010 has been a busy and energizing year. The idea has jumped from the speculative blog posts of tech influencers into code, meetups, and attention from everyday users.

Federated Friday #4

It's been a few weeks since my last Federated Friday post, and it's been an exciting time for the federated social web. The launch of the Diaspora alpha, Friendika, and the PuSH-enabling of YouTube have made a lot more accounts followable through federation. Here are a few people and organizations I've started following in the last few weeks.

Ad server changes on Identi.ca

Some users on identi.ca have noticed that we've changed our ad server on the site. I wanted to take some time to explain what's happening there, and why.

ABC News Radio launches abcnewsradio.fm on the StatusNet cloud

I'm personally excited to note that one of my favorite projects in development on the StatusNet Cloud is now open for public use.  abcnewsradio.fm is the microblogging service of ABC News Radio, one of the most trusted sources for news and information in the US. The launch of abcnewsradio.fm means that listeners and fans will be able to get information from the service over multiple channels, including the federated social web.

First-ever StatusNet Customer Survey

Thousands of people download the StatusNet software each month. Thirty-two thousand have signed up for a cloud service account on status.net. That's a treasure trove of experience with our software, and we'd like to use that collective experience to make our product, and our business, more responsive to users' needs.

Federated Friday #3

It's Friday on the federated social web, which means I've got a new round of people to follow. You can subscribe to these OStatus-enabled social network accounts using StatusNet or another OStatus-enabled platform.

Four New Themes on the StatusNet Cloud Service

One of the things that makes StatusNet such a fun project to work on is getting it into the hands of other Web developers and seeing what they do with it. I'm especially interested in creative UIs for the software. I'm happy to say that we have some new themes available on the StatusNet Cloud Service available to all users.
Site owners can change their theme by going to the Admin menu (linked from the top of the page) to the Design admin panel. The theme chooser is in the middle of the panel!

Federated Friday #2

Yes, I know it's Sunday, but I was on a plane from Paris to Montreal on Friday, so I'm running late with my federated follow recommendations. These are people who have accounts that are reachable with OStatus; you can follow them on StatusNet or any other OStatus-enabled platform.
