StatusNet is a great platform for enterprise microblogging. Our biggest source of interest is from unhappy IT professionals who are frustrated with Yammer's user acquisition model and high fees. Today, we're happy to announce the launch of our Yammer import tool, to help organizations migrate their social networking data out of Yammer and into a platform they control.

Federated Friday #1

This is the first in an irregular series of people I think are worth following using your StatusNet or other OStatus-enabled accounts. If you're using StatusNet, you can subscribe to these accounts by clicking the Remote + button under "Subscriptions" or by entering the "sub <account ID>" command.

I wanted to take this opportunity to discuss security issues in a federation context.

Features of a federated social web

Yesterday I spoke about the federated social web – what its structure was and why people are interested.

But what will a federated social web do? We don't know, exactly: these kinds of systems tend to change when put into practical use. It took a while for email to handle file attachments reasonably well, and the HTML 5 process shows how much Web interfaces have changed over the last 15 years.
