I attempted to sign in to identi.ca with the open id http://thanetstar.com/ which I use in a number of locations however identi.ca returned the error message that this was not a valid OpenID. I'm guessing this is due to URL inspection rather than fetching the page for the relivant meta-tag data.

ou've marked your HTML as 'XHTML Strict', but the OpenID link elements are old-style HTML4 empty elements () rather than XHTML empty elements (, note the /).

I'm pretty sure if you update that, your OpenID should work.
