Something similar to 'd username message' (in the Twitter convension) in which the individual recipient would be shown the message in their IM client, but no one else.
Including an option in the settings to activate distribution of direct messages as an email as well as Jabber update would be nice too.

Note that IM delivery is not currently supported, but is described in this ticket. Reopening.

I've opened a new ticket for sending direct messages by IM (#829) and another for sending direct messages by SMS (#830). If that's OK, I'm re-closing this ticket.
