Some aspects of notice formatting aren't 100% obvious; whether an @ or ! or # will link the way you want, what an attachment will look like, whether your link will fit right after shortening.
It could be quite nice to provide a preview, either as you type or on demand, to confirm the message will look right before posting.

I think this is a great idea. This feature could also offer to do a brutal shorten to 140 characters for the user or also to show similar dents. Just like in the bug system of Ubuntu- if you enter a title to a bug it asks you if you really want to submit this issue and shows you some issues with similar titles.
this could reduce erroneous or redundant dents dramatically.

I just "wasted" 10 mins because of such missing preview

what counts is that I lost time, which does not increase the "happiness" feeling towards the statusnet system (btw: I am pretty in favor of statusnet, but I could imagine other people getting angry)
various reasons led to the time waste:
be it user specific (typo) or a prob for identica. group naming not so obvious
also: since I had a redirect to twitter I had to delete it there and also delete the original dent
