When I last looked closely at http://centrim.status.net/ (maybe when served using a 0.9.x version of StatusNet) AFAIR all notices appeared fine.
Now (1.0.1) a number of past notices include spoilt characters where previously there were, for example:
* nonbreaking spaces
* em dashes — —
* probably ellipses … …
* and certainly at least one other encoded character.
