Since there is an ability to post long statuses in identi.ca, could it be so that when they are mirrored on twitter.com, people can see the start of the tweet and a link to the identi.ca status so that they can see the end of the tweet (like in http://thenextweb.com/apps/2011/01/31/tweetdeck-officially-unveils-deck-...).

As far as I know this is already done. See this example:

However I reserve myself for having made changes to the TwitterBridge linkify(), longnoticecheck-thingies etc. on Free & Social. So it may not be available in vanilla StatusNet. If not, it wouldn't be hard to fix.

This can easily be done with a federated installation of StatusNet. Longer notices are sent to twitter truncated with a shortened link at the end.
