== Different languages seem to have language files with different sizes ==
The number of strings available for translation is different for different languages. It seems as if new strings have been added, but these are "available" only for translation into languages that have been added after these strings were added. Here is an overview of the number of strings available:
||All ||421||
||Portuguese PT ||318||
||Spanish ||318||
||Esperanto ||318||
||Portuguese BR ||318||
||French ||317||
||English NZ ||317||
||German ||318||
||Italian ||318||
||Danish ||318||
||Russian ||318||
||Ukrainian ||417||
||Norwegian ||417||
||Korean ||318||
||Turkish ||318||
||Dutch ||318||
||English GB ||318||
||Japanese ||318||
||Catalan ||318||
What is curious is that "All" has an even higher number of strings than the two languages with the most strings (Ukrainian, Norwegian).
What is needed is a '''mechanism that makes newly-added strings available to ''all'' translators''' so a whole bunch of languages won't be stuck with incomplete translations.
== Generally "missing" ==
All title attributes should be translated as these are an integral part of the user interface. The same applies to alt attributes for images.
It seems that at least ''some'' title attributes were added to the latest version (Ukrainian, Norwegian) but I have no way of checking whether that is the complete set of title attributes. The set should be '''complete, and translatable in every language'''.
As far as I can tell there are currently only two "content" images in the UI: the identi.ca logo in the header and the CC badge in the footer. Both have an appropriate alt text. But while the first is simply the text "identi.ca" - nothing to translate here - the second indicates the applicable type of CC license: where a localized version of that license exists (and is linked to - see #534), this alt text should be translated accordingly. It is '''currently missing from all translation files'''.

Updates
#1
Another thing missing is language names: a menu or dropdown list of languages to choose from should list each language ''in its own language''. So instead of "Dutch" the user should see "Nederlands", and so on.
This is related, but these strings should not '''all''' be present in each language file: only a single language name in each so it can be translated appropriately for the UI. Alternatively, a separate mechanism should be provided to translate each language name in their own language.
#2
This should be cleared up now with our TranslateWiki integration; the .po template files are now being consistently rebuilt and should all have the same set of available strings.
