It can be difficult to tell whether one is subscribing or unsubscribing.

Updates
#1
This is esp. useful in user lists eg if you are searching for users in 'Germany'.
Usability: Additionally I would recommend to use a green hook and a red X to signal the actions following a click.
#2
Done in 0.7
#3
In 0.9.0rc1:
* Subscribe = grey button
* Unsubscribe = grey button
* Subscribe = green + (plus sign)
* Unsubscribe = green - (minus sign)
> red X
= Suggestion =
If unsubscribe succeeds in a single step (without asking the user "Are you sure?")
* use red for the - minus sign.
If unsubscribe requires more than one step:
* use amber for the - minus sign.

* #879, ''Make the 'subscribe' / 'unsubscribe' toggle button state more visually distinct''
(Sorry, I missed that ticket before re-opening this one.)

In in two minds about the multi-colours. The default colour palette is very nice, without adding 'meaningful' colours.
If amber is used for a pause button (http://status.net/trac/ticket/2023#comment:1) then should amber be used here, might amber be used for other things? Etc.; where to draw a line? http://identi.ca/notice/15807859 I agree that the user should not be overloaded.
