What is the difference between a status.net account like me.status.net and an identica account like identi.ca/me?

Identi.ca

Identi.ca is a micro-blogging service powered by StatusNet. You can use it to write short notices about yourself, where you are, and what you're doing, and those notices will be sent to all your friends and fans.

How is Identi.ca different from Twitter, Jaiku, Pownce, Plurk, others?

Identi.ca is an Open Network Service. Our main goal is to provide a fair and transparent service that preserves users' autonomy. In particular, all the software used for Identi.ca is Free Software, and all the data is available under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license, making it Open Data.

The software also implements the OpenMicroBlogging protocol, meaning that you can have friends on other microblogging services that can receive your notices.

The goal here is autonomy -- you deserve the right to manage your own on-line presence. If you don't like how Identi.ca works, you can take your data and the source code and set up your own server (or move your account to another one).

See Why identi.ca is different from other services for more information.

How is having an Identi.ca account different from having a Single User Cloud Account on status.net?

Identi.ca is a community using the status.net software. When you create a Single User Cloud Account you have your own (one person) instance of a status.net installation. You can configure certain settings: increase your notices from 140 characters to 200, 400 or more. You can also change the background of your status.net homepage.

What does Facebook Connect on Identi.ca do?

Facebook connect allows you to login and create an account that is connected to your facebook identity. there is also a facebook canvas app that lets to push your identi.ca posts to facebook where they will show up as status updates. http://apps.facebook.com/identica

Where is feature X?

The software we run, StatusNet, is still in development, and many features people expect from microblogging sites are not yet implemented. Some important ones that are expected 'soon' are:

We have a roadmap that we use to plan the development of future versions of StatusNet.

There is a list of bugs and features that you may find interesting. New ideas or complaints are very welcome.

I used to be able to see the favourites and replies of other users; where'd that go?

  • With the StatusNet 0.9.7 update that functionality disappeared from the UI. You can still get it by manually appending `/all' to the url of a user's page. For example,
    http://identi.ca/evan/all

How can I edit the languages?

  • I'd like to edit parts of the languages. For example, if you would want to change the phrase "Friends" into "Buddies", how would I do that? I couldn't find a language file.

Where is HTML stored?

I would like to modify the default text on the main page where I installed the micro-blog, example:

This is example.com, a micro-blogging
service based on the Free Software StatusNet
tool. Join now to share notices about yourself
with friends, family, and colleagues! (Read
more)

I've grep'ed for this to no avail. Where is this text stored?

These are sitting in the doc-src directory.

but i could not find the words in the doc-src or doc directory. even i delete all the files in the directory,it still there.

Dear friend you can go to the file /lib/action.php and find and edit the text you desired

I cannot find the text in StatusNet 0.8.2! It is hidden somewhere in function showAnonymousMessage(). Can sbd help on that?

This is %%site.name%%, a [micro-blogging](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro-blogging) service based on the Free Software [StatusNet](http://status.net/) tool.

isn't in statusnet.po locale file

How about StatusNet translations?

Is there a i18n project? What's the way to contribute?

Yes! Please feel free to join the existing translators in the sntrans group on identi.ca or the statusnet-i18n mailing list.

Translations can be made at translatewiki.net. Register a user and follow instructions.

How can I stop automated account creation?

Installing the reCAPTCHA plugin can help significantly with cutting down on unwanted spam account creation. Setting your site to be invite only is also a good option in your config.php add.

or run this command

 /statusnet/scripts/setconfig site inviteonly 1
