Another great "source" of information (*kneeslap*) is the source code. Yes, it's hard to understand if you're not a techie.

The StatusNet mailing list http://lists.status.net/mailman/listinfo/statusnet-dev has lots of interesting people who can help out.

The #statusnet IRC channel on freenode.net includes a lot of friendly folks, not least the StatusNet core developers.
