Loopt

According to the wikipedia article, "Loopt's geosocial networking services show users where friends are located and what they are doing via maps on their mobile phones. It is available on select devices across Sprint/Nextel, Boost Mobile, Verizon, and MetroPCS, as well as the iPhone and the BlackBerry." (loopt's website, http://www.loopt.com, does not make clear what loopt is.)

Loopt is presently pretty popular (a number of my coworkers use it, and it seems popular amongst Apple fanboys) and has it's own Apple iPhone commercial. So, it seems logical that identica could learn from it's feature set - we're already pretty close.

Here's what identica is missing from the loopt feature set (as far as I can tell... I've never run it :-) )

  • Geolocation support - see ticket #869
  • A mobile XMPP client that supports XEP-0080. Lampiro is probably a great candidate for this. (NOTE: I'm not advocating for a full laconica mobile client - just a XMPP client with XEP-0080 support. I feel this is far more attainable.)
  • Maps showing people who are subscribed to you (their home and/or their recent dents), maps showing who you are subscribed to
  • notifications when a subscriber and/or subscribee enters a given radius of your recent dent and/or home
