Past StatusCamps

Raise Your Communities Status

We are encouraging the creation of StatusCamps much like StatusCampMontreal, but in your city! Here are some thoughts on how to make a successful StatusCamp. Much respect to Creative Commons Salons and WordCamps which really have pioneered the way for us to do great events!

When

StatusCamps are probably best organized as annual or semi-annual events. Some might want to do even monthly, but its best to pick a date and time that best fits your community. The first StatusCampMontreal we did as an annual event to coincide with the annual week of StatusNet employees in Montreal.

Budget

The best events are those that are free. Try to minimize the costs for your organizing group and especially for those that attend the event. If free is not possible, then figure out a rough estimate of how much you need, starting with the cost of the venue.

Venue

Pick a reasonable venue, ideally located next to public transit or that is near most of the people who might come to your event. Ideally, this venue will be free, but most definitely should be within your budget.

Sponsors

Sponsors are always nice! As for sponsorships from the company, StatusNet, we provide in-kind support in terms of press, association with regional status.net-connected people, and can help with building up relationships. If you work with sponsors outside of StatusNet please keep us posted about who they are, but this is not a prequisite.

Registration

The ideal setup is to create a wiki page at http://statuscamp.org for your event like StatusCampYourCity, then copy and paste the wiki source from another camp like StatusCampMontreal.

Registration ideally should be FREE. We strongly encourage this.

Internet and Power

Please provide simple and easy to use Wireless. Ideally its just an open wifi access point. Provide as many details as possible very visibly to all people. Also, super important is to provide many power outlets throughout the venue. If you are using a big conference hall or space, make sure to have many power cables with multiplugs.

Schedule

Make sure to post up the schedule time slots beforehand and ask for topics before the event. The day of the event, need to allow for participants to influence the schedule, but don't let it go too crazy. Better to make a clear direction, consolidate topics, and spend more time meeting than discussing how and what to meet about.

Presenters

If there are notable community members or related partners, it works quite well to start the day with some more focused presentations at no more than 20 minutes in length. Sometimes it works to have a wrap-up at the end of the day.

Since StatusCamps are unconference, its crucial to have a leader in each session and also have someone who takes notes on this wiki about what happened. Without notes, then what you discussed didn't happen as far as the web is concerned!

schwag

If you are wanting schwag (t-shirts and stickers), please contact jon@status.net (http://identi.ca/rejon)

Spread

Work with us to spread the news about your StatusCamp! You should decide a timeline for announcements preferably 1 month away from the event, 1-2 weeks from the event and more frequently towards the real date for your event. Of course, use StatusNet to announce your camp! Ping http://identi.ca/rejon if you have any questions.

Tag

Its very cool to create a hashtag for your event. We like short ones like #statusMTL for StatusCampMontreal or #statusSF for san francisco. Pick one and stick with it! Cheers!

Volunteers

Volunteers are crucial. Entice people from the community to help out and make the statuscamp successful. Volunteers can help with the flow of the event, to present, and sort out parts of organizing your event. Volunteers like free food and t-shirts too!

Event Insurance

Thanks to our friends from Wordcamp for reminding us its good to make sure your venue has insurance, especially if you are in the USA: http://insurevents.com. But don't trip out about this...

Feedback

Please post your feedback publicly on your http://identi.ca or http://status.net site and use the tag for the event!
