I'm glad to see this page getting a bit of love. If this page can be clear, there'll be a significant barrier to contributing code removed. :)

There are lots of git resources around. They tend to be quite different, so it could be some time before potential contributors find one that gives them the "aha" moment. Also, the generic git guides don't tell contributors how things are done at statusnet/gitorious.

What I think would be cool here is some common contribution use cases covered off, from joining gitorious, cloning (both now added, I see), through to merge requests. I think the documentation here has started along that path. (Also questions like how statusnet reviewers like contributions split.) It just seems we are missing the chance to provide some very quick, specific instructions covering 90% of contribution cases.

And I would do it myself, only I'm still figuring it out.
