Despite the usage of an Application to post notices to your StatusNet micro-blog, the web interface is the place where you can control all of the functions you micro-blog offers. When you log into your site, for example identi.ca where most of the screen shots are coming from, you are redirected to the public timeline from where you reach all other pages within a few clicks.

[edit] Public Timeline

Screen-shot of the public timeline. Areas of interest are marked and discussed in the text

The public timeline is dominated by the stream of currently posted notices to the server. Depending on the configuration of the StatusNet installation the public timeline is updated automatically whenever someone is posting a new notice while you're looking at the page (a realtime Plugins like meteor has to be installed to enable this feature). Other elements of the page are to following:

  • The sites logo. Clicking at the logo on any page will bring you back to the public timeline
  • The main menu (marked with a 2 in the screen-shot). The contents of this menu change whether you are currently logged in or not.
    • If not it contains links to Register an account at the site, to Log in and links to the Help and Search pages.
    • If you are logged in you'll find a link to your Home/Personal-page at the server. Two links to edit the settings of your account Account and Connect. A link that let you Invite others to the server and a link to Logout. If you have admin rights on the server, there will be a link to the admin panel in the main menu as well.
  • An input box where you can post new notices and attach files to your postings (not at the screen-shot as it was taken logged out).
  • Above the timeline there are five tabs (marked with a 1 in the screen-shot) which are linked to the following
    1. Public: This tab contains the public timeline of the server itself.
    2. Groups: An overview of all groups that are available at the server.
    3. Recent tags: A tagcloud build from all used tags and group names in notices at the server. Tags that are used more often are displayed in a larger font size.
    4. Featured: This tab contains a dedicated page listing all the featured users of the site.
    5. Popular: This tab contains a dedicated page of the currently popular notices at the site.
  • The most popular notices at the server, the notices that got faved recently by a sufficient large number of users, are displayed in the upper part of the sidebar (marked with a 3 in the screen-shot).
  • Beneath the popular notices the groups with the most members are displayed (mark 4).
  • At the bottom of the sidebar some of the featured users of the server are listed (mark 5 in the screen-shot).
